Music lovers around the province and other areas attended the eighth Phalaphala Royal Heritage and the third gospel festival in huge numbers at Nandoni last weekend.
The festival was a huge success and, according to the organisers, it provided an excellent platform for local musicians to showcase their talent. Some of the artists that left music lovers crying for more included, Rebeca Malope, Naphy M, Rapson Rambuwani, Sho Madjozi, Makhadzi, Ringo, Leonard Dzhaka and many more.
The festival was attended by people from various communities in Limpopo and outside the province.
The organiser, Mr Shandu Nesengani, said that the festival was aimed at providing a development platform for the growing number of local artists who left the region to go to Johannesburg to seek opportunities. “We see the event as contributing to social cohesion and nation building, while entrenching our African identity through musical performances,” he said.
According to Nesengani, the main aim of the two festivals was not to make a profit but to market the province and display the talent to be found here. He added that “very little is going on regarding the promotion of Venda artists in South Africa”.
He indicated that many good artists lived in the Vhembe District, and it hurt to see things ending up in the street or being pirated without benefiting the artists who spent sleepless nights working on such projects. He added that occasions such as the festival were where the area also celebrated the uniqueness of its culture. He thanked all the sponsors and all the people who attended the festival.
“The festival provides the province with an opportunity to unify its citizens and the neighbouring countries to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and promote tourism in the province,” he added.

With a successful roots-reggae album titled “Shandukani” to his name, Fhatuwani Richard Mashele is quickly becoming a household name in South African music. Better known as Jah Saint in music circles, Mashele believes that success does not come overnight and that one must work hard to earn it.
Khathutshelo Dzaga from Thohoyandou Block G, known as Khathu within music circles, has captivated her fans with her latest song, “Muvhonetsheli”. The song is a collaboration with Uber Black and features Racha Kill. The song is in Khathu’s familiar style, often described as a mixture of amapiano and Afro-beat.
“Music should help address societal issues that are affecting the community,” says house musician Meshack Nemakhavhani, better known as Mesh De Vocalist. The musician from Tshaulu Buluni has released a new album, titled “Mbilu I Khombo”.
Musician and actor Mpho Majiga is quickly emerging as the next king of disco on the South African music scene. The position became available after the passing of the late, self-styled king of disco, the legendary Dan Tshanda.
