Just give him a piece of white paper and a pencil and you will see some amazing things happening right before your eyes.
The 22-year-old self-taught artist, Thabelo Phungo from Khubvi outside Thohoyandou, is eager to establish himself in the art industry. This young man possesses amazing artistic skill that leaves people speechless. You just have to take a closer look to see that his drawings are not photographs.
Phungo said that he started drawing at a tender age. “My mom once told me that when I was still in a crèche, I started drawing things that made my teacher happy,” he said.
A few years later, when he was at Mbulu Primary school, his God-given talent became even more apparent. “My teachers loved my drawings and they motivated me to continue,” Phungo added.
Phungo used to draw cars, but this changed when he started enjoying drawing people. “It’s really amazing to see yourself drawn on a paper. I didn’t focus much on drawing in the past, because education is important. I used to draw during my free time,” Phungo said.
He studied for a diploma in Electrical Engineering at Vhembe TVET College’s Makwarela campus.
He drew inspiration from a well-known artist, Bono Siaga. “She encouraged me a lot to use my talent. Since then, art has become very important to me,” he said.
He recently drew the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, and President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa. His drawings cost R250.
Phungo said that his family was very supportive. “Every time when I finish a drawing, they congratulate me. They also buy me papers to draw on. It shows that they are happy with my work,” he said.
His dream is to have his own art gallery. “I want people to come and see my work and help young people to use their talent. In future, I want to use paint to express myself,” he said.

The 22-year-old Mbulaheni (Gary) Ridovhona has been passionate about journalism to the extent that he would buy himself a copy of weekly Univen students' newsletter, Our Voice. After reading, he would write stories about his rural village, Mamvuka, and submit them to the very newsletter for publication. His deep-rooted love for words and writing saw him register for a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies at the University of Venda, and joined the Limpopo Mirror team in February 2016 as a journalism intern.

Khathutshelo Dzaga from Thohoyandou Block G, known as Khathu within music circles, has captivated her fans with her latest song, “Muvhonetsheli”. The song is a collaboration with Uber Black and features Racha Kill. The song is in Khathu’s familiar style, often described as a mixture of amapiano and Afro-beat.
“Music should help address societal issues that are affecting the community,” says house musician Meshack Nemakhavhani, better known as Mesh De Vocalist. The musician from Tshaulu Buluni has released a new album, titled “Mbilu I Khombo”.
