Maru to record DVD live during weekend concert

The well-known gospel singer, Marubini “Maru” Rahulani, plans on recording her new album live during a concert at the Madombidzha Amazing Grace AFM Church tomorrow (Saturday).

Rahulani’s music career started at an early age. Unlike many local artists who used to sing in the church and were mentored by their peers, Rahulani said she used to sing in the streets whilst playing traditional games like duvheke, which has similar rules to cricket. “I remember that one of my neighbours was astounded by the melodies I could produce. She suggested that I should come and sing at the church. Unfortunately, I did not take heed of what she said since none of my family members used to go to church,” said Rahulani

“I grew up as an active, energetic, ambitious, enthusiastic and organised girl,” she said. Being a sporty person during her early years helped her to achieve a healthy balance in life and not be bothered about adult issues.

“Most of my schoolmates became parents long before they could reach matric and I am grateful to the Almighty God who sustained me. My role models have been both my parents, particularly my mother. They gave up all their fabulous material possessions in order to build a future for me and my siblings. This is what I would like to impart to my kids,” she said.

She released her first album, Jordan, in 2005, with contained songs such as Vhuhuwavho ha undivhuhulu and Jevo Jaira.

Rahulani says she is working on her investment plan to share her musical knowledge with the youth. “I will engage in a talent search and conduct music workshops around Limpopo during the school holidays. My immediate dream is to establish a recording company that will help to unearth, mould and give an opportunity to rural youths to realize their music potential.”

She is concerned to see that so many young people consume liquor or use drugs. She feels that, with God in a person’s life, it is not necessary to use artificial sources such as drugs to be happy. She also realises the importance of education and she encourages the young ones to put education first.

Rahulani reckons the music industry is heading for a dead end because of piracy. “There are no more music shops in town, because they could not compete with these ruthless thieves who sell our music at next to nothing. Many in this industry have lost their jobs and artists are now at the receiving end as their music is found on pavements and sold for as little as R10, with the money going to the pirates,” she said.

Saturday’s music festival at Madombidzha starts at 18:00. Other artists who will perform during the event are: Tiyani Maluleke, Thabelo, Thabelo Thavhanyedza and Rachel and Takie Sikhwivhilu.

Tickets for the event are already available at R50 for kids, R100 for adults, R250 for VIP seats and R300 for VVIP seats. Bookings can be done at Computicket.
