A hip-hop dance-hall artist made an apt transition from his genre to kwaito after he realised that his love was grounded in kwaito. He also discarded his old stage name and came up with a new one.
Under his previous name, Blaqsoul, the artist had released two mixed-tapes, entitled Blaqsoul and Tshamato. The song Tshamato went on to do well, getting massive airplay and earning the artist the kind of respect and acclaim he so deserved.
On 2 February, Blaqsoul discarded his stage name, and adopted a new one, Garaba la Venda. For the sake of clarity, a 'garaba' is someone who goes to work harder and amass a fortune in the big city, and comes back home to the rural areas with the purpose of showing the improvement in his life to those closest to him.
“I am Garaba la Venda, because I have just brought new music to my fans,” he said. “The name change also signifies a new era in my music career. Music is not just instrumental sounds; an artist needs to know how to twist the voice and come up with amazing lyrics. That's what makes good music and that's exactly what lovers of good quality music expect from a song.”
A resident of Madodonga village, Garaba la Venda has also found a new studio that signed him up. MBA Records will now be managing his music affairs. “However, I still play lead guitar and piano, thanks to the reggae maestro Jacky Nethomboni, who offered me guitar and piano lessons,” he said. “I attended school at Nngweni Secondary School at Biaba in Nzhelele, and Nethomboni, who is a teacher there, would use his free time to offer me music lessons.”
Garaba la Venda will release an extended recording at the end of February and he hopes that his fans will love the eight tracks on it. “People have been talking about my disappearance from the music industry and they were worried that I had no new music coming through,” he said. “Now I want to restore their happiness and jolt them with the release of a new work at the end of this month. They should know that my music is a combination of beauty and the sound of fireworks.”

Tshifhiwa Given Mukwevho was born in 1984 in Madombidzha village, not far from Louis Trichardt in the Limpopo Province. After submitting articles for roughly a year for Limpopo Mirror's youth supplement, Makoya, he started writing for the main newspaper.
