Three men arrested for rape and murder of gogo (83)

Three men briefly appeared in the Tiyani Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the death of Gogo Mojaji Sebyene (83), of Sereni village. She was attacked and killed on the 16th and the alleged attackers were arrested last Tuesday.

The case against Happy Mohale (24), Stanley Zwidofhela Mugwena (27) and Thomas Serepa (29), was postponed to today (Friday) for a formal bail application and, according to the spokesperson for the Limpopo Police, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the case was moved from Tiyani to the Tshitale Magistrate’s Court “for logistical reasons’.

According to Mulaudzi, it is alleged that the three suspects had forced their way into the gogo’s room and demanded money. She was sleeping and alone in the house when the incident took place. “They then dragged her to nearby bushes where they allegedly raped and assaulted her," Mulaudzi said. It is also believed that they had left her in the bushes, returned to her house and set it alight.

She was later found by community members who rushed her to Elim Hospital, where she passed away.

The incident came as a huge shock to her family and the community. Her granddaughter, Ms Tshifhiwa Sebyene, said that her grandmother had lived alone. “She was a much-loved person and we did not expect her to leave us in such a horrible manner,” she said. “Imagine a defenceless granny of her age being strangled and raped. We were robbed of a very loving grandmother, who made sure that we got whatever we wanted. We will never forget her and she will be sorely missed,” she said.

“I have accepted her death, but I will never forgive the murderers. The murderers do not deserve to live with people, but with wild animals in the bush,” she said.

The managing director of the Munna ndi Nnyi forum, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, condemned the act of rape and said that it was unwelcome in a society where women should be respected and celebrated for their social role. "Anyone who commits such a dastardly crime is not a real man. Whoever did that ill act to the aged lady needs to be removed totally from society."

The president for Vhembe Traditional Health Practitioners, Maine Vho-Mbilivhili Neluvhola, condemned the act of rape. “The matter was brought to our attention by the community and the police,” Maine Vho-Neluvhola said. “As a community leader, I feel shocked by what happened. We can't condone acts like these. My feeling is that there's a lack of respect among the youth. The youth need to understand and accept that the elderly are their grandparents and not objects of sexual engagement.”
