“Wheelbarrow dancer” turns heads

In 2005, the village of Makonde-Shadani outside Thohoyandou became known to many South Africans because of the brutal ritual murder of a local soccer star, Maanda Sendedza. The village has now produced a zealous young lady who carries a wheelbarrow with her teeth.

To someone who does not know her, Andani Rambofheni is just an ordinary 21-year-old girl who does not have a distinctive posture, but the power in her teeth makes her the darling of bemused spectators who enjoy seeing her perform her act wherever she goes.

She quickly dismisses the allegations that she uses muti for her performance. “The people who spread rumours that I am using muti are just jealous of my success. God has given every person a talent in this world and it only depends on the individual how he or she uses the talent. Let them talk; they will never take my talent away and I will continue to entertain people until my last day.”

Andani, who is in Grade 10 at David Mutshinyalo High, said she started her wheelbarrow act in 2012. “It just came to my mind that I should do something unique to make a name for myself. It took me approximately three months to be perfect and I used to rehearse alone in my room.” Her first public performance was during a party in her village, when she was overwhelmed by emotion because the local dancers were not impressive. “I then requested a wheelbarrow and started dancing while I carried it with my teeth, and everyone was impressed. Since then, everyone respects me for my talent and local people always invite me to dance during their parties, but I don’t charge them any fees for now.”

Andani says she wants to take her talent to a professional level. “I want someone who can assist me to get professional shows, so that I can get some income to assist my unemployed parents. I think the wheelbarrow dancing style can be a hit in the ever-growing music industry.”

Andani’s father, Richard Rambofheni, says he is very proud of his daughter. “I was not aware at first but people used to tell me that my daughter had a special talent. One day I went to see her performing at a party and I was very impressed. We just need someone who can take her dream further.”

Community members who want to assist Andani to be a professional wheelbarrow dancer or who want her to perform at their events can visit her at Makonde Shadani or call 073 196 5797.
