Young girl raped and left to die in street

A seven-year-old girl was raped and left to die in a street at Olifantshoek in the Hlanganani policing area on Sunday.

According to the police's preliminary investigation, a 32-year-old suspect was traced and eventually arrested after a car chase, following the discovery of the raped girl.

It is alleged that the suspect was the last person to be seen with the girl.

According to the information made available by the police, the girl was allegedly sent by her grandmother to deliver house keys at the suspect’s house. The child didn't return and was later discovered by two boys in the street, bleeding and unconscious. The police were alerted about the incident.

The police's provincial spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, said that the girl was rushed to hospital where she died a few hours later. “It was confirmed at the hospital that she had been brutally raped. A post mortem will be conducted soon to determine the cause of death,” said Brig Mulaudzi.

On Tuesday, the suspect appeared in the Hlanganani Magistrate's Court held in Tiyani and his case was postponed to 26 March for further investigation and a bail application.
