Makhado municipal mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi wields a pick to signify that the work has started in the Eltivillas CBD.

R13 million to fix the roads in Eltivillas

The R13 million street rehabilitation project in Eltivillas kicked off last week when the mayor of Makhado officially handed over the first site to the appointed contractor. The mayor, in his speech, also warned that no shoddy or sub-standard work would be accepted.

Mayor David Mutavhatsindi launched the project last Friday and said in one of the first phases the Eltivillas CBD and taxi rank would receive attention. The project was launched in the presence of street vendors, taxi drivers and owners and business stakeholders.

The director of technical services in the municipality, Mr Lufuno Ragima, said access streets and the provincial road in the area would be resurfaced. The appointed consultant, Mr Takalani Musandiwa from TM Africa Engineering Service, said they would also do the road markings, construct the edge beam and renovate the toilets.

Mayor Mutavhatsindi said it was the responsibility of the ward councillor, Cllr Vincent Mahladisa, members of the ward committee and stakeholders within the ward to ensure that the project was running smoothly. “We expect quality work from the contractor; there should be no excuses. This should be a project that will last long and not just shoddy work,” he said. He said the contractor knew the procedure and he had to ensure that members of the community were benefiting from the project.

Street vendors and taxi owners in the Eltivillas business area accused the municipality of neglecting them. One of the taxi owners, Mr Abel Lishavhane, said the municipality should build a proper taxi and bus rank in Eltivillas and Makhado Town. “Makhado Town does not have a proper taxi rank and this makes it difficult for the commuters to travel, especially when it is raining,” he said.

Another project launched simultaneously with the Eltivillas streets rehabilitation is the phase 2(B) project, which will focus on the rehabilitation of streets in the industrial area in Makhado Town. In this R9 million project, some parts of Jeppe, Kruger, Vorster and Presidents Street will be rehabilitated. The rehabilitation includes pothole patching, cleaning of storm water drainage and road marking. Both projects should be completed by September 19.
