The incomplete Mpheni clinic.

Clinic at Mpheni still not completed

The Mpheni clinic, on which construction started in 2010, has still not been completed.

Residents of Mpheni and surrounding areas are visibly upset with the lack of progress. The project was supposed to have been completed in 2011. It was then extended for a further four months, but two years later, not much has changed.

A community member, Mr Jackson Musingadi, says at the end of last year they had tried everything they could to have the department finish the construction, but in vain. He said they had written several letters and held countless meetings with parents and departmental officials, but nothing fruitful had come out of these. "We were told that the department had terminated the contract with the contractor because of underperformance, but the contractor claims that the government did not give him enough funds and that is why he abandoned the building."

The department said no one was willing to take up the tender to finish the clinic because the remaining job was too small and contractors said there was nothing to gain from that particular tender. "The department once promised us that workers from Public Works would come and finish up the building, but they have never fulfilled their promises," said Musingadi.

The spokesperson for the Department of Health, Adele van der Linde, said the department was aware of the problem at the Mpheni clinic. She said the issue had been discussed at several meetings and the department was doing its best to have the building finished. “We have put Mpheni clinic on our priority list for projects that need urgent infrastructure attention,” she said.
