Local ritual murders in the spotlight

The Vhembe District Municipality, together with its four local municipalities, is organizing a summit that will focus on the ritual killings in the district.

This was revealed by the executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, after the recent ritual killing of Mercy Ndou. She went missing from her home in Shayandima on 27 May and her mutilated body was found at Tswera village on 15 June.

Matibe said the municipality was very concerned about the increasing number of ritual murder cases, where people were found dead with body parts missing. “We sympathize with the families and communities affected. We condemn the acts in the strongest terms.  It is inhuman to kill another person. The myth that one can benefit from killing someone is not true, and our people must know that. Our community must understand that for a business to succeed, you need stock,” said a very worried Matibe.

Matibe said his office was busy arranging a date when a  summit on ritual killing would be held. The summit will involve different stakeholders such as clerics, businesspeople, traditional healers and traditional leaders.

He expressed his worry that several youths might be involved in ritual killings. He also encouraged the community to work hand in hand with the police to make sure that the perpetrators are brought to book.
