Several new traffic officers for Limpopo

The general manager for traffic and safety in the Department of Roads and Transport in Limpopo, Ms Litshani Mulaudzi, has urged road users not to look at traffic officials as enemies but as people deployed to ensure that laws and rules were followed.

She was speaking during the passing-out parade of 57 new traffic officers from Mpumalanga. The parade, which was also witnessed by 250 new recruits from all over Limpopo, took place at Manenu Traffic College about two weeks ago.

Mulaudzi said her department was well aware of the carnage taking place on the country's roads and was closing all loopholes to address it. “Speeding and drunken driving are some of the worst enemies on our roads and many innocent lives have been lost through them. We are determined to stop this, and to show our commitment, we are currently training a further 250 new traffic officials.

She said the recruits would be ready and dispatched to the different parts of the province by February 2015. “Our aim is to have traffic officers on our roads day and night, because some road users take advantage of the night and ignore traffic rules. We will be everywhere and will exercise zero tolerance,” said Mulaudzi.

She said they had the best training facilities and urged her counterparts in Mpumalanga not to open an own college. “It is not easy; continue using ours,” she said jokingly.

On behalf of the mayor of Mutale, Cllr Gilbert Netshisahulu urged the new officers to go out and to serve their communities faithfully. He also discounted the rumour that the college was to be moved elsewhere in the Polokwane area.

“I can assure all of you here that an amount of R25 million has been set aside for the improvement of this college, which shows that the government has no intention of relocating it. As host municipality, we are very proud to have such an institution, which is known to produce high-quality products,” he said.
