Tshifudi Musangwe tournament to honour Jealous Mmbaushi

Thousands of people expected to attend the musangwe (traditional boxing) tournament to honour the late king of musangwe, John "Jealous" Mmbaushi at the Tshifudi Stadium tomorrow (Saturday).

According to the president of musangwe in the area, Mr Tshilidzi "Poison" Ndevana, bare-knuckle fighting "has been part of our lives since the 18th century and we are not prepared to trade it for anything.” He said even if boys were seen to be excelling during the event, it would not necessarily allow them to fight older people. “We have different age groups and they have to wait to be of age to fight those in their age groups. There is order in this sport, and one thing we encourage is respect for the elderly,” he said.

He added that the preparations had been finalized. His commitee members had met the traditional leaders, and they had given the green light. "With the blessings of the traditional leaders, nothing is going to stop the season from being a success,” added Ndevana.

According to him, most of their fighters have the potential to make it in boxing and he is encouraging them to follow boxing and not end up only as unpaid fighters. "We are hopeful that we will soon produce a world boxing champion from this area,” he said.

Volunteers are randomly chosen from two teams to fight until one of them is either knocked out or surrenders. "I don´t fear anybody. I believe in fighting with an opponent or enemy until he conquers me or I conquer him,” said Thuso “Ngwazi” Ramukakati. He promised his fans that he was going to win when he met with Cinah Nephalama in the finals.

Cinah Nephalama said it was the sport that he enjoyed most. "Some say it is a primitive game, but I don’t agree. It is meant to promote friendship, because we bear no grudges after the fight, even if one is defeated. This is the game of our forefathers and we will never stop following in their footsteps."

The tournament will start at 09:00 until and end at 18:00. Ndevana said that they were going to break for the MMK Administrators league soccer match between Madridars vs Gaba Union Fighters at 15:00.

No entrance fee is to be paid for the event.
