Another soccer referee allegedly beaten

Violence broke out towards the end of the first half in the Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators League Stream E match between Tshikhwani Stone Breakers and Mpheni Home Defenders on Saturday at the Tshikhwani grounds.

The assistant referee, Mr Sengani “Sky” Ravhuhali, was allegedly assaulted during a brawl and the match was abandoned. According to Ravhuhali's report, the match started well, with both teams fighting for superiority. He said the score in the game was 1-0 in favour of Defenders when chaos erupted in the 40th minute of the first half.

According Ravhuhali, a player of Defenders who was not playing on the day insulted him and started to punch him in his face. According to him, the angry player would have killed him, had it not been for an official of Breakers. He said that the situation was no longer conducive for them to carry on with the game and that they had no option but to stop it.

The coach of Breakers, Mr Masia Mulaudzi, also mentioned that his team was behind 0-1 when the assistant referee was allegedly beaten. He said that during the chaos, the officials of the Defenders and Breakers tried to calm the situation by requesting their supporters on the pitch to leave. "The officials and players of the home team (Breakers) then protected the assistant referee until he managed to escape."

Last month, the referee who was officiating the match between Makhitha Iyarunga and Maebane Young Eagles, Mr Ndifelani Mathabwe, was allegedly beaten and the match was abandoned. Angry fans accused him of being biased. A fortnight ago, the assistant referee in the match between Mpheni Home Defenders and Tshikota Chelsea was allegedly beaten and the match abandoned when the assistant referee raised his flag for an offside when Chelsea scored.

The chairperson of the Safa Vhembe league competition committee, Mr Mulimisi Muneri, said that he was still waiting for reports from both teams and the assistant referees. “If we get these reports, the team will appear before a disciplinary hearing,” said Muneri.
