“Consider a career in the media world”

More than 250 pupils from various schools in the Vhembe region participated in the Phalaphala FM Royal Gardens Festival Career Guidance expo to encourage them to consider careers in media studies, communications and journalism.

The event took place in the Phalaphala FM parking square last Thursday for a one-day-long career in media studies, communications and journalism. The scholars also received study tips and information on bursaries. They also met with staff members from Phalaphala FM, Limpopo Mirror and even SABC2 Tshivenda soapie actors,  who also advised the learners to take education seriously.

Mr Gideon Ramulifho, curriculum advisor at the Department of Education in Vhembe, said the event was organised to encourage pupils to look to the media world as possible careers. “Getting information on a daily basis about what is happing countrywide is of vital importance for every learner today. We have to advise them to look at careers in journalism, communication and media studies as it helps to shape the country,” said Ramulifho.

Mr Gabriel Temudzani, one of the actors of the Tshivenda soapie, Muvhango, said education was the most powerful weapon to defeat poverty and unemployment hindering rural communities. “Your future belongs to you and it is up to you how to build and shape it. It is through hard work and dedication that you can move higher and higher,” said Temudzani.

The spokesperson for the Department of Human Settlements, Mr Ndivhuwo Mabaya, advised learners that poor family backgrounds did not mean that they could not reach for the sky. “Some of us were born and raised in poor backgrounds, where our parents could not afford education for their children. With good matric results, some bursaries are up for grasb. You must not be proud of your parent’s qualifications, but be boasting of your own qualifications,” said Mabaya.
