Candle reduces family home to ashes

Life took a drastic turn for the worse for the Ratsibi family when their six-room house burnt down to ashes last Wednesday (31st) at Ha-Maelula village.

Mrs Mutshinyani Ratsibi and her three children were left homeless when a fire started, which spread across the whole house and reduced it to ashes. The fire was apparently started by a candle when the family members were out of the house, taking one of the children to the bus stop to embark on a school trip.

Ratsibi’s eldest daughter, Pfunzo Ratsibi, who is just 18 years old, said she was in total shock when she saw the fire consuming her home. “I could not believe my eyes when I saw our house in flames when we were on our way home,” said Pfunzo. “Our school uniforms, books and clothing were all burnt. I am only left with the clothes that I am currently wearing,” she added.

Ratsibi said that they could not recover anything from the house as they had difficulty putting out the fire because of a shortage of water in the area. The councillor for Ward 30 in the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Fhumulani Madzhiga, said that it was sad that an incident like this occurred just a few weeks before the electricity provision project was finalised in the area.

The family indicated that they would welcome any assistance to help them to get back on their feet again. “I need to give my children a home again,” said Ratsibi.
