Weekend of carnage on Soutpansberg roads

The past weekend proved tragic to more than one local family.

On Thursday, 1 September, the weekend got off to a bad start with an accident in which a 7-year-old girl from Musina was killed in a motor accident. The exact cause of little Jaydeane Kitching’s death is still being investigated. According to information available to the newspaper, Jaydeane was with her mother, Ms Jolene Kitching, when the accident occurred.

Later on the same day, one male passenger was seriously injured in an accident along the N1 north when the bakkie he was travelling in capsized en route to Musina.

On Friday evening, the Makhado emergency services had a very busy time, attending to three different accident scenes. The first accident was reported along the road to AFB Makhado. Two vehicles crashed into each other, but luckily no one was seriously injured.

Shortly after his accident, two trucks collided with each other along the N1 south near Bandelierkop. While attending to this accident, rescue workers were called out to a third accident along the Madombidzha road, just a few hundred metres from the Ledig turn-off. Mr Koos Venter was travelling in a northern direction, and was in the process of turning right into one of the farm’s access roads, when another vehicle travelling in the same direction, collided with him. The driver of the second vehicle apparently did not see Venter signalling his intention to make a turn, and overtook two other vehicles, in the process crashing into Venter’s side of his bakkie. Neither Venter nor the other driver was seriously injured.

Sunday afternoon the N1 was once again the scene of yet another fatal crash, involving a bakkie. The exact cause of the accident is still being investigated by the local police. It is alleged that the driver of the bakkie lost control over his vehicle in the vicinity of the weigh bridge along the N1 north. Two people were killed, with another passenger being critically injured and a further six who sustained cuts and bruises.

The weekend carnage continued on Monday along the N1 north about 10km from Musina. A small truck with a trailer had a minor crash with another vehicle. However, before the two vehicles could be moved to the side of the road, a passenger bus travelling towards Louis Trichardt, collided with them. The bus driver apparently tried to avoid the accident, but could not swerve out in time. At the time of going to press, no deaths had been reported, although there were some passengers on the bus that were critically injured. It is said that some 60 people were injured.
