Girls pass volunteer virginity tests

Women’s Day was celebrated at the Madombidzha Angel United African Apostolic Church (AUAAC) Church last Tuesday with the announcement that 16 teenagers from the Sinthumule area had passed voluntary virginity tests.

The guest speaker during the event, Ms Takalani Mashamba, a senior lecturer in health sciences at the University of Limpopo, said that the youth must be educated in order to add value to the economy of the country. She warned the girls against sexual activities before wedlock and said that they must believe that God will provide them with the right husbands.

"I also want these young girls to focus on their studies and their future, rather than to become pregnant,” she added. She advised them not to expose themselves to pornographic material.

After passing the virginity tests, the girls receive certificates and a beautiful dress, said Vho-Jafuroho Sarah Ratshibaya of the AUAAC. According to her, the parents are very supportive and there are even teenagers from neighbouring churches who have asked to take part in the programme.

One of the parents, Mr Nicolas Munyai, indicated that he was happy that the programme had been initiated in the village. “It is a good thing that children are focusing on their education without any disturbances or engaging in sexual activities,” he said.

Ms Fhulufhelo Munyai was among the young women who volunteered for the testing. She said she did not allow peer pressure to control her life. “Although many teenagers may regard these actions as stupid, I know what I am doing,” she said.
