New school opens at Madonsi village

Some local pupils have to walk long distances to their schools, but pupils at Madonsi village outside Malamulele had their burden eased when a school was opened right on their doorstep.

The school was completed two years ago, but certain challenges prevented it from being utilised by the community.

The opening of Vuswayi Secondary School brought excitement to the village as it eased the burden on parents and learners and absorbed more than 300 learners from Shingwedzi, Malamulele and EPP Mhinga School.

A fortnight ago, ecstatic parents wore uniforms and accompanied their children who still have uniforms from their old schools to the new school. The parents, who came in their numbers, also attended the first morning devotion assembly at the school. Circuit Manager Shadrack Maluleke addressed the meeting.

Speaking during the opening, local civic chairperson Dan Khanyi said they were relieved that the long walk for education for their children was finally over. “We have been worried for a long time that this facility built some time ago could not be utilised while our children risked their lives by walking long distances in unsafe areas to seek education.

Ms Johana Maluleke, parent of Shilaveko Mabasa (15) who is in Grade 9, said she was very relieved that her daughter would no longer have to walk a long distance to Malamulele Secondary School. “We are very excited as parents that our children will have enough time to study as they used to come back tired from the long journey to and from school in Malamulele," she said.

Headman Mlunghisi Hlungwane of the Madonsi traditional authority said they had engaged the department for a long time as they were worried about the safety of the learners who had to travel long distances while a school lay without being used. “We are very happy that, at long last, our children will not have to travel long distances,” he said.

Presently, the school has 11 teachers.
