R50 000 reward for info on murder

The Nedombeloni family of Itsani, whose son Lavhelesani (27) was killed by suspected robbers, thought they would soon find closure as there were several positive leads to his murder.

The incident happened in January 2016 at Itsani and almost half the year had gone by without anyone being arrested for his murder, even though the family had given the police some clues. The recent announcement that a reward of R50 000 was made available by the police for information leading to the arrest of his murderers  had brought back lost hope to the family.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Hani Mutele said they had been following leads since the murder was committed at the beginning of the year, but so far these had not yielded positive results. "We believe there are people who might have witnessed this crime being committed but are keeping it to themselves. We need that information badly, as we believe it is of vital importance for us to crack this case.”

He added that the police always encouraged members of the public to be their eyes and ears and to inform them of any crime committed that they might know of. According to Mutele, the reward is a clear indication that the police really want to crack the case and put the killers behind bars.

Ms Rendani Nedombeloni, the deceased’s sister,  said that the death of her brother had left a big void in the family and that the family was struggling to come to terms with his murder.  She said with such an amount up for grabs, they just hoped the real killers would soon be found and sentenced to jail to pay for their heinous deeds.

"We have suffered its enough. We cannot even sleep some of the days because we do not know what happened to him before he was killed. We need closure in this matter and we strongly believe the police this time around will get the right suspects," she said.

The deceased's brother, Thinandavha, said that his brother survived on piece jobs and he got paid on the day he was killed. “According to our information, he was drinking at one of the taverns at Tshisahulu and those with him saw that he had money. They wanted him to buy them liquor but he refused and after a while he decided to go home. He was ambushed not far from home.”
