Young mother stabbed to death

When domestic worker Pfunzo Ramadzhiela of Maembeni outside Thohoyandou woke up early on Wednesday and prepared herself for work as usual, she did not know it would be her last day on earth.

The 22-year old mother of two never reached her work place as a man allegedly ambushed and stabbed her several times not far from her work place. She was later certified dead at the scene. She is believed to be the second person to be killed at the spot, which is next to a busy bus stop. It is said that she was killed in full view of early morning commuters, who allegedly did nothing to help her.

The man had reportedly casually stopped a taxi and left the bleeding woman lying on the road. Within a short space of time, the scene was swarming with curious onlookers as the woman lay dead in a pool of blood.

The sister of the dead woman, who did not want her name published, said that the relationship between her sister and the man had deteriorated after she had allegedly discovered that he was cheating on her. "She took a painful decision and packed her things and went home to cool off, but the man could not wait. Last Sunday, the man came and demanded his phone, and while she was fetching it from the house, he tried to suffocate her,” she said.

The local traditional leader, Chief Rasivhaga Mphalaleni of Maembeni, said the incident left her in shock as she had tried to solve the couple's problems. "This is a sad moment for the village as we have never experienced something like this. As leadership we are going to call a meeting at the weekend and make our people aware that no problem is too big to be solved and that there are institutions that could help them, free of charge," she said.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe confirmed the incident, saying they had opened a murder charge and that they were expecting an arrest soon as the suspect was known. "As police we urge couples with problems to seek help at government institutions that offer counselling free of charge and also from non-governmental organisations that are nearer to them, rather than killing each other," she said.

Family members being comforted by the police are seen leaving the scene of the murder.

The body of the dead woman is being taken away in a mortuary van.
