Musina FM extends broadcast area to Nzhelele

Musina FM has extended its broadcast area by an additional 40km radius, which now allows them to reach the full broadcast area allocated to them by the Independent Communications Authority of South African (ICASA).

The expansion comes as a result of a donation of a 500 megawatt (mw) radio transmitter by De Beers Venetia Mine. The new transmitter replaces the existing 250mw transmitter, which could not cover the whole broadcast radius of the station. This means that the radio station will now be able to broadcast in Nzhelele, Masisi, Madimbo, and some parts of Zimbabwe.

The corporate affairs manager of De Beers Venetia Mine, Josephine Pieters, applauded the youth-managed radio station for their work in the community and encouraged them to use this resource to drive change and educate communities.

Portia Raphalalani, programme manager for Musina FM, said that they had needed a new transmitter for a number of years. "Since I joined the station two years ago, we have dreamt of having a more reliable range. It is good news that De Beers Venetia Mine has heeded our call for assistance and that they continue to support our radio station. Words alone cannot express our gratitude to the mine for their kind assistance.”
