Two Wits students to be buried

The two students from the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) who died during the accident on 1 May will be laid to rest on Saturday and Sunday.

According to Mr Alpheus Mulima, Dakalo Mulima (23) will be buried on Saturday at Mulima Thondoni. The funeral service will start at around 06:00 at the deceased’s home.

The 19-year-old Rachel Matibe’s funeral has been arranged for Sunday morning. The service will start at 06:00 at Murunwa village, said the deceased’s uncle, Mr Jerome Matibe.

Rachel and Dakalo died after a minibus taxi they were travelling in crashed into the back of a stationary trailer that was on the road in the vicinity of the Nyl Plaza. The minibus reportedly burst into flames and claimed the lives of seven students.

Rachel was in her first year, studying towards a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery qualification, while Dakalo had just graduated with a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in March 2016.

The University of Witwatersrand held a general memorial service for seven students at the Wits Great Hall on 13 May.
