Family terrorized by mysterious fire

The Sebola family staying in Ravele village in the Sinthumule area feel that they are being terrorised by a mysterious fire that seems to be following them around.

The family members complain of being “haunted” for the past three months. On four occasions their property was damaged by fires. The latest incident happened last month.

“We are living in fear because we don’t know when this will stop,” said gogo Mukumela Sebola. “The first fire started a month or so ago when we were all outside the three rooms I shared with four of my siblings. Community members came to help, but it was too late. The second time, I was sleeping and realised there was smoke coming from under my bed. I woke up and tried to fight the fire, but the flames were so fierce that water only made them worse,” said Sebola.

“Then we’ve moved to a two-room house, and it also caught fire. We had to watch our belongings go up in smoke. We lost everything and we are homeless, living with a friend,” she said.

Since the mysterious fires erupted, many people have visited them to express their condolences, including members of different churches. The gogo said that she never would have thought that something like this could happen in her house: “I am stunned, because people claim it can happen if you have debts or have a grudge against somebody.” According to her, she does not harbour grudges against anybody.

She appealed to people to help them by donating foods and clothes and also to pray for the family, so that the fires can stop. The gogo now stays with her mother-in-law at Matidza Nzhelele.

Sgt Thilivhali Malowa of the Tshilwavhusiku SAPS communication services said she was aware of the incident but the family had not registered any case with the police.
