NEWS UPDATE: More trouble at Vuwani?

The decision by the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane to turn down the application by the people of Vuwani and neighbouring villages to rule their inclusion into a new municipality that would include Malamulele has been received with anger and suspicion.

Shortly after the judgement was handed down by Judge George Makgoba and communicated to the residents, many cried foul, saying it "was cooked".

Hundreds of  residents had hired buses to follow proceedings in Polokwane on 20 and 21 April, but they were not allowed anywhere near the court. In a scuffle that ensued with the police there, many residents were injured while trying to pass police barricades to the court.

Since then, the situation in an area that has been marred by violent protests for the most part of last year and this year has been tense, with many roads barricaded with rocks and burning tyres during the night but quiet during the day.  Community members who spoke on condition of anonymity said they had tried all peaceful means and the legal route in an effort to show the government that they were dissatisfied with the unilateral decision taken to include them in a new municipality to please the people of Malamulele.
