Construction of new houses underway

A few days after the Mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope, announced that the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) had allocated 1 000 houses to the urban area of Musina, the construction of the houses had already commenced and was going smoothly.

Community members in need of housing were encouraged to register their names with the municipality from 7 to 18 March this year. Those who were already on the waiting list were encouraged to verify their details and status in the housing register of the municipality.

Prospective beneficiaries should be South Africans with a green bar-coded identity document or smart card with a family's combined income of R3 500 or less. The disabled, senior citizens, child-headed families or foster-care recipients had to submit confirmation from SASSA that they received government grants. After the registration process, all documentation was sent to Coghsta, whereafter the qualifying beneficiaries will be contacted for housing allocation.

According to Mayor Muhlope, the Freedom Charter, which was adopted in Kliptown on 26 June 1955, stated that there shall be houses, security and comfort. "We know that our people are desperately in need of houses and that is why we are working with different stakeholders to make sure that everyone benefits from the fruits of our hard-earned freedom," she added.
