Responsibility Fund to benefit students

The University of Venda launched a social responsibility fund a fortnight ago. The theme of the event was Torch of hope, and it is an initiative that aims to raise funds for students who cannot afford tertiary education.

The vice-chancellor of Univen, Prof Peter Mbati, told Limpopo Mirror that the university was honoured to be supported by the business enterprises for the establishment of the initiative. “We acknowledge the generosity from the stakeholders and the business people to ensure that the students pursue their dream,” he said. He also stated that the National Students Financial Aid Scheme was unable to fund all the students and that this initiative would help to eradicate the plight that some unfunded students faced.

The president of the SRC, Ms Mashudu Nthulane, stated that the initiative was going to end all challenges faced by black students and it was going to improve the quality of education at the university. “The drop-out rate at this university will be reduced from 15% to 0%,” she said.

She mentioned that, at the present stage, they had already received R12 million from the stakeholders and business enterprises and donations from students, lecturers, businesses and the community. ''The university workers pledged R1 200 per month from their own pockets towards the fund,'' she said.

Mr Remani Mulangaphuma from the Thohoyandou Business Forum encouraged businesspeople to dig into their pockets in order to sustain the initiative. “The students are really supporting our businesses, so it is up to us to give back to the students,” he said.

An honours student in applied linguistics, Mr Hlayisani Maluleke, said during the event that the initiative would help to break the spine of poverty among Univen's students.
