Two eager interns in the Zoutnet camp

Zoutnet, publishers of Limpopo Mirror and Zoutpansberger, have welcomed two journalism interns at the beginning of February.

The 22-year-old Mbulaheni (Gary) Ridovhona has been passionate about journalism to the extent that he would buy himself a copy of weekly Univen students' newsletter, Our Voice. After reading, he would write stories about his rural village, Mamvuka, and submit them to the very newsletter for publication.

“During that time, my passion was broadcasting journalism, but I decided to go for newspaper journalism, due to limited resources in broadcasting journalism,” he said. “Writing stories has always been my passion. I am fascinated by the world of journalism.”

His deep-rooted love for words and writing saw him register for a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies at the University of Venda.

“What I love most about journalism is that it keeps people abreast of news that entertains and educates,” he said. “Now that I have been given an opportunity to put my skills into practice here at Limpopo Mirror's offices, I aim to broaden my journalistic knowledge and expand my horizons in this industry.”

Miss Thendo Savhasa (26) has always loved reading and writing from a very young age. A resident of Shanzha village in the Nzhelele area, she is currently busy with her a national diploma in journalism from the Tswane University of Technology (TUT).

“Journalism is a field which allows one to learn new lessons every day,” she said. “One gets to meet and know different people from different walks of life. As a prolific and analytical reader, I am also a passionate writer.”

She said that she hoped to learn on a practical level the skills of covering different kinds of news beats, interacting with different people and getting to understand the print world.

“I am also passionate about imparting some knowledge to youngsters as a way of adding value to my community,” she said. “So it will be an added bonus for me to be able to work with some schools in initiating some school newsletters at a later stage.”

Gary Ridovhona believes that reading broadens one's horizons.
