Thengwe Secondary School shines bright

The rural Tshandama-based school, Thengwe High School in Mutale, outshone the rest of the schools in Limpopo and was graded number one in the province, despite being situated in a deep rural area.

Of the 432 pupils who wrote their final Grade 12 examinations last year, 218 passed with exemption. The school finished with a 95.60% matric pass rate. "Our school is also in Club 100, meaning it has produced more than 100 learners who got 50% and above in mathematics," said the acting principal, Ms Mercy Madanda.

According to Madanda, hard work and team work between teachers and pupils were behind their success. She said at Thengwe there was no time to waste between educators and learners and each one was always busy during the school day.

“We also have afternoon, Saturday and holidays lessons in our school and we also gave more tests and homework. We started teaching from day one of the opening of the school as learners got their exercise books a few days before the opening of the school,” Madanda said.

She added that the school had also invited motivational speakers "to motivate our learners and educators, so that they will take education seriously.
