Muslim Jamaat donates uniforms to poor pupils

For 50 pupils from five local schools in Thohoyandou, going to school with tattered uniforms and barefoot are a thing of the past.

The pupils from Thivhileli Secondary, Tshiluvhi Primary, Lukunde Primary, Liivha Secondary and Tshiluvhi Primary School all received full uniforms, which included school shoes. The donation came about after some disadvantaged communities approached Cllr Maria Ramanala of Thulamela Ward 21 for assistance with their children’s education.

Ramanala approached the local Indian community who, through the Venda Muslim Jamaat, donated the uniforms. They were handed over to the pupils on Tuesday at the local mosque.
Mr Zubair Patel, who was accompanied by Shaik Omar Maposa, Ilyas Patel and Mahamud Osman, said they are following the teachings of the Koran.

He said they were touched when they heard about the children’s plight as they are the future of the country. “The Koran teaches us to love one another and to look after the poor. Ours is a practical form of religion which does things practically and not just saying it without doing. We have been of help to many needy communities, some of whom we fed when they were hungry, and we brought water for drought-stricken communities."

Cllr Maria Ramanala thanked the Venda Muslim Jamaat. “We have a big challenge of unemployment and poverty in our communities. Those who are blessed should share their blessings with the less fortunate and we appeal to local businesses to be of help to the community. We are also humbled by the good gesture and we will always be indebted to you as an organization,” she said.
