New R950 million mall for Thohoyandou

The construction of the new Thavhani Mall, which has been on hold for almost two years because of alleged land disputes, can start anytime soon.

This follows the successful transfer of land from the municipality for the construction of the mall. The much anticipated R950 million mall, the brainchild of Thavhani Property Investments, is to be built next to the Thohoyandou Stadium at the old show grounds.

The mall will take up approximately 12ha of the 27ha site, which is in a prime location at the intersection of the R524 road to Louis Trichardt. According to the developers, the mall is set to be the first step in creating "an exciting surrounding mixed-use node, with future developments including drive-through restaurants, motor dealerships, an office park, big-box retail and other commercial developments".

The latest news is not only good for job seekers, but also for the developers and the Thulamela Municipality. Mr Patrick Flanagan, executive director of Flanagan & Gerard Property Development and Investment, a shareholder in Thavhani Property Investments, stated that the Thavhani Mall would be a top-notch regional shopping centre. "With more than 106 retail stores, restaurants and service outlets, the people of Thulamela will be delighted to have access to a modern shopping mall on their doorstep".

Local businessman Thovhele Nkhaneni Ramovha of Thavhani Property Investments, who first had the vision of the mall six years ago, has high hopes for the mall. “It is great that we can finally start construction on the Thavhani Mall. It will boost the local economy and create much-needed jobs,” he added.

Thulamela Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi spoke highly of the proposed new mall. “This is a huge step towards the achievement of our vision, that of attaining a city status by 2030,” she said.

Mr Paul Gerard, managing director of Flanagan & Gerard, said that the Thavhani Mall would become a landmark and was going to change the face of Thulamela.
