Well-known businessman, philanthropist assassinated at his home in Tshixwadza

A 40-year-old businessman, community chairperson and correctional officer, Mr Mushathama Musweswe, was shot and killed at his home at Tshixwadza village in the Mutale area.

The heinous murder, which shocked the family, community members and his colleagues, happened at around 21:00 on Saturday.

From what could be established, Musweswe was relaxing with his wife when two unknown armed men stormed into the house. According to the spokesperson for the Limpopo police, Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba, the deceased was shot four times: three bullets hit him in the upper body, while one round hit him in the head. His wife was also shot in the leg, but she survived. At least 24 empty cartridges were collected on the scene.

It has since emerged that Musweswe had first escaped death when he was driving to work on 8 April this year. A group of criminals had shot at him from the front. He apparently fled from his attackers and rushed to hospital, with two fresh bullet wounds. He was hospitalised for about two weeks. Ledwaba confirmed the first incident.

On Saturday, the second attempt was made on his life.

When Limpopo Mirror visited Tshixwadza village on Tuesday morning, there was an atmosphere of pain, dread and fear still hanging in the air. There were hardly people walking the dusty streets.

The deceased's next of kin, Mr Nyambeni Musweswe, said that, as a family, they had no comment at that stage.

Chief Namadzavho Nwedamutsu expressed his total shock at the killing of a “gentleman” who had served the people of his village with dignity. “He was my chairman who knew so well how to organise community projects which benefited the poor, unemployed people,” Nwedamutsu said. “He had good relations with all people. We are greatly saddened by his death. We will remember him for his good works.”

The commissioner for the Thohoyandou Management Area (Department of Correctional Services), Mr Takalalani Mashamba, said the department had lost a hardworking employee in the person of the deceased. “We are shocked, sad and in much pain – most particularly when we look at the manner in which he exited this world,” he said. “We worked with him; he was our colleague.”

Musweswe will be laid to rest on Saturday.
