“Graduates must help shape country”

 

The chancellor of the University of Venda, Mr Kgalema Motlanthe, described the graduation ceremony as one of the most important occasions on the university's academic calendar. He congratulated the students whohad  received their hard-earned degrees and diplomas and he urged graduates to help shape the country with their academic knowledge.

Motlanthe said the graduation ceremony marked the culmination of many years of personal sacrifice and hard work. Last Thursday and Friday he was addressing the more than 2 000 recipients of certificates, diplomas and degrees. Six doctoral degrees were also awarded during the four sessions.

Vice-Chancellor and principal of the University of Venda Professor Peter Mbati was optimistic that the qualifications the students had acquired during their years of study would go a long way in helping them and their communities to change their lives for the better.

Professor Mbati said Univen was a comprehensive institution which offered a range of undergraduate and post-graduate qualifications in the fields of study that were responsive to the development needs of the Southern African region, using appropriate learning methodologies and research.

The overall best student in the school of law, Mr Duri Jorum, was very excited upon hearing that he had won the prize as best student. He said hard work and determination were the reasons for his success. Jorum also won several awards for being the best performing student in the school of law, such as the Dr MA Chhaya award, the Timy’s Cab Projects award and the School Medallion.
