Godeni killer receives 26 years in jail

The mother of the 16-year-old girl who was ruthlessly killed by her boyfriend said she welcomed the sentence imposed on the killer.

The Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou sentenced Mboniseni Malala Hulumeni (35) of Gondeni -Sterkstroom last week to an effective 26 years for murder, defeating the ends of justice and stabbing a witness. He was sentenced to 18 years for murder, five years for defeating the ends of justice and three years for stabbing a witness.

He murdered his live-in girlfriend, Pretty Pikani Vukeya, in December 2013 after dragging her to some bushes in the Gondeni area. Vukeya, of Ha-Muraga, was a Grade 9 pupil at Thase Secondary School and stayed with her boyfriend at his place at Gondeni village. Her body was found in the morning by a passerby, who notified members of the community.

Her body was found with wounds on the head, left hand, mouth, fingers and her waist. A panga was used to murder her.

The case was postponed several times and the community of Muraga did not miss any date, which showed the interest in the case. It was only finalized last week and, after judgment was passed, community members rejoiced, but others had mixed feelings.

Even the police commended the justice system for sentencing the criminal to a lengthy prison period.

Outside court, the mother of the deceased, Ms Hildah Mbedzi, said the sentence suited her and she was happy that, even though it had taken a long two years, the court had finally sent him to jail. “I could not sleep ever since it happened. I just thought of my beautiful girl and that she would no longer come back home. The worst thing that kept making me sad was the fact that he did not plead guilty and did not shed light as to how and why he did that.”

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo was full of praise for the justice system and the community. “We are happy that the case was prosecuted successfully, and we commend the justice system for a job well done. We would not have succeeded if it were not for the community who came forward and gave evidence that led to a conviction. As police, we will always welcome this police/community partnership and it shows that if we work together, criminals would not have any place in the community,” he said.

Pretty's mother, Ms Hildah Mbedzi, still wants answers.
