Former pupils assist in developing Phaswana School

Two former pupils of Phaswana Secondary School, Fhatuwani Mutuvhi (39) and Sylvester Mpandeli (41), who passed with matric exemption when they were in Grade 12, are now academics of note.

They visited the school about three weeks ago, with the aim of assisting in its development. During a meeting, the two decided to donate a R10 000 cash reward for the best Grade 12 pupil every year. They also gave books to Grade 12 pupils.

Dr Fhatuwani Mutuvhi, who works in the office of the Minister of Communications, said the bond they had with the school could not be broken. “We studied here and I still remember the class where I did my Grade 12. We are here as examples that big things can come from anywhere. One’s background is not a measuring rod to determine one’s destiny,” he added.

Prof Sylvester Mpandeli, who works for the Water Research Commission in Pretoria, said they were also going to mobilize resources and other needs for the school. “We know of the challenges here and we have heard what the school requires. We are going all out, and we will do what we can and even knock on different doors. We will assist the school in facilitating and drawing up business plans and funding proposals for infrastructure development,” he said.

The principal, Ms Gladys Ravele, was over the moon. “The initiative comes at a time when we are celebrating being the best school in the Thohoyandou cluster in the 2014 Grade 12 examinations. This will be quite a good year for us. We are very motivated and we will work harder to achieve a 100% pass. We are appealing to other pupils who studied here to follow in the footsteps of the two and come back to assist their brothers and sisters,” she said.
