R10 000 bail for Tshiozwi teacher

A 54-year-old teacher, Mr Gilbert Mamburu from Tshiozwi village in Sinthumule, appeared in court last Friday on a charge of the possession of illegal cigarettes. He was released after paying bail of R10 000.

The teacher was arrested last Thursday, along with three of his alleged associates. His co-accused, Takuzo Mutswiro (22), Tatenda Nyamhunga (31) and Joseph Mhembwe (27) were remanded in custody. All three are Zimbabwean citizens. They will appear again in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate's court next Tuesday (March 17).

According to a statement by the provincial spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, police officials followed up on information they received about suspicious activities at the teacher’s house. “Upon arrival at the scene, three suspects attempted to run away, but they were quickly apprehended by the members,” said Col Otto.

The police discovered illegal cigarettes with an estimated value of more than R2 million in a small truck as well as a light delivery vehicle. According to the police, the origin of the cigarettes, as well as their destination, forms part of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Tshilwavhusiku police spokesperson, Constable Thilivhali Malowa, said the investigations were continuing. “We confiscated a truck, a mini-van and illegal cigarettes worth R2 million,” said Const Malowa.
