Unique rondavel library for Bodwe

The lack of facilities such as libraries is a series setback for most communities in rural areas, but with a bit of ingenuity and effort, a solution can be found.

This is especially true in Mashau Bodwe village, where a rondavel was converted into a library and has become a popular venue for school children and others who use it as a base to expand their knowledge of the world.

The idea for an own library started with one of the residents, Mr Freddy Mufamadi. He approached some sponsors and acquired old books and then converted his old rondavel to be used as a community library. Since its inception in January last year, many children have been utilising this facility and especially primary school pupils visit the library after school to borrow books.

According to Mufamadi, he realised that the closest library, the Makhado municipal library in Louis Trichardt, was too far away and many people in his community could not afford to travel there.
His project was enthusiastically supported and at least seven elderly women from the community dedicated their time after school to assist children to access the library easily.

Mufamadi said that several institutions had promised him more old books. He is also looking for a sponsorship that will help him to build a decent community library.

The ward councillor, Cllr Simon Mthombeni, acknowledged the initiative and said that there were limited sports and recreation facilities in the area. “As government we encourage our citizens to start these initiatives that will help us develop our education,” said Cllr Mthombeni.
