The devasted family of Baloyi is still struggling to cope with the situation.

Man commits suicide after hacking wife to death with panga

A 27-year-old woman of Matsila village was allegedly hacked to death with a panga by her estranged husband, before he hanged himself at the graveyard last Friday.

The unfortunate couple were Ms Hlaisani Baloyi and husband Humbulani Randela (39). The incident, which left the community and the family with many unanswered questions, happened in the afternoon. The couple’s relationship has been described by many as violent as it was said that they were always quarrelling and fighting.

Family members confirmed that they had recently separated, but were reconciled before the incident. It is also alleged that the man had once attacked the wife with a panga, but the problem was later resolved.

Limpopo Mirror paid the family a visit on Saturday. Relatives and neighbours were comforting the family, while other relatives were busy cleaning the place where the woman had been killed.

Ms Gladys Baloy, sister of Hlaisani, said the incident had caught them off guard. “It came as a shock to us, having to lose two people in one day. We are very sad," she said.

She said she was shocked by what she saw. “Imagine blood oozing and deep head wounds on a person. It was a very scary situation,” she said. She mentioned that the police had reacted swiftly, but the man had already run away in the direction of Nkuzana village. They organized a search party, and the man was found hanging from a tree inside the Nkuzana graveyard.

The mother of Randela, Ms Phophi Madzinge, said that if her son had serious problems with his wife, he should have just let her go home without harming her. "It will be very hard to forget what he did," she said.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila said the incident had come as a shock to him. “We have not experienced anything of this nature before, and this has left the village in a state of shock. All we can do now is to make an appeal to the community not to resort to violence as a way out of their problems,” he said. Matsila called on all couples with problems to approach traditional leaders or other professional structures that could help them.

The spokesperson for the Vuwani Police, Insp Elijah Malatjie, said a case of murder had been opened by the police and investigations were continuing. An inquest docket in respect of the dead man had been opened by the Hlanganani police.

The two deceased will be buried at the Matsila-Makhethakhetha and Matsila-Tshisimani cemeteries tomorrow (Saturday).
