The normally busy streets of Malamulele resemble a ghost town this week.

Unrest again looms at Malamulele

All is quiet in Malamulele as the community has embarked on a five-day stay-at-home mass action.

Buses and taxis were not moving and streets were deserted, with people staying at home. Unlike in the past, when unruliness held sway as part of the Malamulele community’s demand for their own municipality, Malamulele town was deserted from Monday after community structures resolved on Sunday to embark on a five-day shutdown of services in the entire forum area.

The area covers more than 100 settlements.

After a meeting with representatives of community structures, Mr Isaiah Ndhambi, spokesperson of the Malamulele Municipal Demarcation Task team, the body that represents the community in their fight, said that the shutdown action was arrived at to “register our concern to the powers that be that we as a community are not being treated well.”

Ndhambi said the only key areas excluded from the community strike were the hospital and clinics. He also said those who had lost next of kin were free to approach mortuaries on Friday to arrange for funerals. According to him, the situation will return to normal on Saturday.

On Sunday, they will hold a “post mortem meeting” and “map the way forward”.

Last year, the different communities in the area shunned voter registration as they vowed not to vote until they were given their own municipality.
