Makhado Municipality improves audit outcome

The Makhado municipality has improved its audit outcome and has moved one step closer towards receiving a clean audit.

The auditor general's report for the local municipality had improved to a qualified audit opinion in 2012/2013. This ended a period of several years during which Makhado received disclaimers and adverse opinions from the Auditor General (AG).

In the 2013/14 financial year, the outcome moved to a financially unqualified audit opinion, but not yet to the clean audit that the municipality was hoping to achieve. The outcome means that the municipality's audited financial statements contain no material misstatements.

The mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said during the final council meeting last year (December 15) that the outcome proved that the institution was in good hands. “We are able to account for every single cent in the municipality,” he said.

Mr Gerald Odendaal from the AG's office in Limpopo told the municipal council to maintain the status they had achieved as they strived towards achieving a clean audit. “You need to understand what you can do as a municipality to maintain the status and also what needs to be done in order to improve,” he said.

Mr Odendaal added that the municipality should address all the problems of the previous financial years. “We need to address all the issues that have not yet been addressed,” he said.

The municipal manager, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali, added that the municipality was motivated to improve on its status. “The institution is well led by the mayor, his executive committee and councillors. This also means that our committees are doing the best oversight work,” he said.
