The father of a 17-year-old boy who was shot at the gate of their home on Saturday night in Mamvuka village in Nzhelele, described the incident as a most unexpected, shocking experience.

A Grade 11 learner, Steven Musina, was shot in the stomach by an unknown man. Apparently the young man went outside the house after hearing a noise. When he was at the gate, the suspect, who was running away, allegedly shot him and vanished.

According to his father, Mr Jimmy Musina, the boy was recovering well at the Polokwane provincial hospital. He told Limpopo Mirror on Monday afternoon that it was a terrible experience that had broken his heart. He said when he arrived at the scene, he saw his last-born child lying on the ground while bleeding profusely. “I heard him crying and calling for his mother that he was shot,” said the father.

The young man was most probably shot by one of the men who were robbing a nearby house. The men robbed a woman of two phones at gunpoint. The robbers apparently targeted this specific house thinking that they would find money or groceries bought for the women’s stokvel group.

It has also surfaced that the gang comprised seven men and that they fled in separate directions after the robbery. The suspect with the gun allegedly shot the boy while being chased in the darkness by community members.

The police have confirmed the incident and are investigating a case of attempted murder and house robbery. Mphephu police spokesperson W/O Lazarus Netshidzati told Limpopo Mirror on Tuesday morning that no arrests had been made yet.

Meanwhile, the local ward councillor, Cllr Mbulaheni Magada, appealed to community members to help the police with their investigations. He condemned such cruel incidents and called on people to establish a concrete relationship and help each other. “We condemn people who fail to work and target others, especially during the festive season,” he said.

The father of the boy who was shot, Mr Jimmy Musina, hopes his child will recover soon.
