Mountain claims another bus

Passengers had to frantically scurry to save their bundled-up possessions from going up in flames, after the bus they were travelling in caught fire.

The incident happened along the N1 North, just before the Hendrik Verwoerd Tunnels, late on Wednesday (12th) afternoon. It is suspected that the bus driver might have ignored road works’ warning signs and drove too fast, causing the brakes to catch alight.

According to the passengers, who were on their way back to Zimbabwe, the bus burnt out in a matter of minutes. There was not even time to rescue the bus’ trailer before everything turned into a blazing inferno.

The Makhado Fire Brigade was quick to help put out the fire. In the meantime, however, a bush camp of the bordering farm also caught fire. Fortunately the local Farm Watch quickly mobilized to assist and they managed to extinguish the fire.

Nobody was hurt during the incident, and alternative transportation was arranged for the passengers, who in the meantime tried to salvage some of their less damaged possessions.
