“Thieves have killed me” - photographer

Hangwani Oskin Maduwa (21) is an unhappy man after thieves broke into his room and stole his photographic equipment.

Maduwa returned to his home at Donkerhoek in Tshitale on Friday night, only to find his room in disorder. The unknown suspects had used the window to gain entrance into his room, since the door was locked.

“When I opened my door and saw how my room was ruffled up, I got angry and felt like I could kill the thieves with my bare hands,” he said. “Thieves are lazy people who do not want to plan good things for themselves. Oh, they've killed me!”

Maduwa's property included, among others, a computer, music system, cameras, car battery charger and a video camera.

“I raised funds to buy photographic equipment by selling some sweets in local schools and in the streets of Makhado,” he said. “I wanted to use the equipment to raise funds for my tuition at an FET, as it's my wish to study there.”

He added that he also used his photography skills and equipment to raise money for good things that he needed in life.

Maduwa said his ancestors and God were very angry with what had happened to his property. “Whoever took my property must return it,” he warned. “Whoever took my equipment will pay dearly. He or she will have to face the wrath of my ancestors and God. Don't say I didn't send out a warning,” he warned.

Maduwa said that he was not an evil person. “In a situation like this, one is forced to retaliate,” he said. “I am only giving the thief or thieves two weeks to return my things. If they fail to do so, I will be praying a bad prayer for that person to get an accident which will leave him or her with one leg and one arm. This is not a joke.”

He said he was that kind of youth who had always wanted to succeed and achieve more things in life. “I don't even wish to steal,” he said. “Now I missed a photography deal which could have earned me R4 000 in Polokwane.”

He added: “My heart is bleeding at the thought that Bafana Bafana is coming to Polokwane on 15 October, where the business will also be good for photographers. But I can't go there and work.”

Maduwa opened a case of housebreaking and theft at the Tshitale police station.

The communications officer at the provincial media and liaison centre for the SAPS, Const Tsietsi Lamola, was not available for comment.
