Dr Naledzani Rasila.

Doctorate for civil servant

 

Naledzani Rasila, who grew up in a poor family in the dusty village of Doli Doli outside Thohoyandou, reached the pinnacle of succes a fortnight ago, when he received his PhD in rural development from the University of Venda.

Rasila (51), senior manager: corporate branding and marketing at the Premier's office, passed matric in 1983 at Mbilwi Secondary School, but he moved to Gauteng in search of some piece jobs, so that he could  further his studies. “I also worked as a private teacher at Doli Doli, Ndouvhada and Matshena Primary schools and then registered for degree in communications at the University of South Africa." He then joined Caxton newspapers as a reporter for nine years.

He joined the Gauteng Department of Housing in 1999 as a communications officer, and in 2005 he was appointed in the Limpopo Premier's office as deputy director of communications.

He then registered for a BA (Hons) with Stellenbosch University and later did a master's degree at the same institution. “While working as a senior communicator, I realised that there is a communication gap between the government and communities and I started with my studies towards a PhD at Univen.

The title of his research was Communication for Effective Developmental Local Government in Rural North-Eastern Limpopo. He did research on the substandard service delivery and disharmony existing between most local municipalities in South Africa and the communities they served.
