Rumours rife that traffic college will move to Mokopane

The recent passing-out ceremony in Polokwane of 50 traffic officers from Mpumalanga, who trained at the Limpopo Traffic Training College in Mutale, has fueled the rumour that the colleague is moving to Mokopane.

Unlike other passing-out ceremonies of traffic students, who had their parade at the training college at Manenu in Mutale, the students had theirs at the parking lot of the Department of Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison in Polokwane.

Sources from within the department have revealed that the department has halted plans to develop the college in Mutale. The sources say there was a budget of R25 million which was allocated to build a three-storey building that was meant to accommodate 200 traffic students. This was the second phase of the project that was estimated to cost R95 million.

About R4 million has already been used to erect a palisade fence, apollo lights and a water reservoir. Another R8 million was used to build six instructor's houses. More than R10 million was also used for the construction of a Grade A Vehicle Testing Station. It is also said that the drawing of the plans has already cost the department R3 million.

The remaining R40 million was going to be used for the construction of an admin block, classes, a hall, a kitchen and a gymnasium.

The college, which is one of 13 registered traffic training colleges with the Safety and Security Seta (Sasseta), started training traffic students in 1997, and Kwazulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North West, Limpopo and several SADEC countries benefitted from it. It offered traffic courses such as basic traffic officer diploma, examiner of motor vehicle, fire-arm training and examiner of driver's licences.

When Limpopo Mirror approached the department, spokesperson Mafenya Lediga was not prepared to react. "I cannot comment on the rumours. The MEC will brief the media about the college at the right time."
