HaaNdi YellowMah raps his way to success

The 19-year-old rap artist HaaNdi YellowMah is quickly climbing the music ladder with his unique voice which has endeared him to hundreds of his peers in the district.

So far, he has performed in major events such as the second Annual Africa Day Reggae Festival and the Makhado Annual Show.

He tells Limpopo Mirror that he developed a love for good music at an early age as he moved between his rural Nthabalala village and Gauteng. Born Khuliso Adolf Mudau, HaaNdi YellowMah is that kind of a youth who has fallen in love with the youth culture. “As youths, we need to know what we want in life and never lose focus,” he says. “My music journey has never been easy or smooth.”

However, determination and strong love for music paved the way for him. “I met different singers and musicians along the paths of life, and everyone of them inspired me in amazing ways,” HaaNdi YellowMah says. “But then I was just getting inspiration and the refreshing air of being in the underground platform of the music industry.”

He started taking music more serious when he was doing Grade 6 and tried his hand at lyric writing but he received destructive criticism from people around. “I didn't even think of quitting but just tried harder, because I knew that music was my first love,” he says. “In life, there are a lot of things which pulls us back to the wilderness of desperation.”

One producer, Kurtis, noticed HaaNdi YellowMah's talent and decided to help launch him as a recording artist. So, in 2010, his first track, Dreams come true, was recorded.

He later met another mentor, Adroit, and worked with him for three years, developing more elements to suit HaaNdi YellowMah's voice and tone. “We recorded a powerful track, Avha divhi caracara, and people liked that track,” he smiles. “I was quickly making a name for myself as a singer. Soon I had around 5000 Facebook friends after the release of that track. It showed that people were interested in my music.”

Early last year he released a single, Ndo mu vhulaya (I have killed him/her). The song tries to dissuade the youth from leading a reckless life and urges them to focus on education.

In 2016, HaaNdi YellowMah received a call from Team Khachamedza and MBR music management to come for an audition. “They wanted me to give them a taste of my music, so that, if possible, they could help grow my music talent,” he says. “At the end of the session, they all expressed satisfaction and said that they were interested in working with me.”

At a later stage, HaaNdi YellowMah decided to go independent to explore the industry further. However, he kept contact and socialised with established artists and producers in the hope of further developing his art. “I am working on my full-length album and it's going to be a dope, believe me,” he says.
