The names of the final nominees of the Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima) were announced during a gala dinner at Joe Matsila Guest House on Saturday evening.
An organiser of the Tshima, Mr Augustine Nethononda, said that since its inception in 2012, Tshima has attracted people from all walks of life, local and national music industry representatives, artists, producers, private sector, government, academic and stakeholders. “Propelled with the financial injection from the National Lottery Board, in partnership with the Matsila Community Development Trust and Rodibrite, this year’s event promises to be at its best. It is funded with an amount of R5,5 million,” said Nethononda.
The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms Nandi Ndalane, said that language was very important and that everyone communicated to be understood. “Language is a vehicle of culture and, through a language, one can learn the values of the people who speak it. Your experience can be expressed best in your home language.”
She said that Tshima was a strategic platform designed to recognise, promote and reward local artists who did themselves proud themselves by singing in the Tshivenda indigenous language while preserving the rich heritage and cultural diversity of the Vha-venda people. She added that the the Department of Arts and Culture supported the Tshivenda Music Awards and encouraged artists, songwriters, composers and producers to continue to promote and preserve the Tshivenda language and culture through music.
Chief Livhuwani Matsila of Matsila Development Trust appealed to the community to stop music piracy “as it cripples the music industry and artists. Artists are famous because we listen to their music, but they die poor. Let’s respect them because music is business”.
