The Vhembe international poetry festival seemingly yielded positive results as most poets dealt with obstacles that hinder their work as well as the manner of preserving the beauty of art.
Most local and international poets flocked to the Timbila writers’ village at Shirley outside Elim a fortnight ago for a three-day poetry festival. During the festival, poets planted trees at the village, read and recited poems and presented seminar papers.
On Friday, they also visited the local pre-school, Jungle Club, and read to the young ones to encourage reading from a tender age.
The festival ended on Saturday night after poets had visited the Mapungubwe world heritage site.
Speaking during the festival opening, Timbila’s director and celebrated poet Vonani Bila stated that the panel discussions wouldgive them direction to preserve their poetry. “We smust also thank the support of the Department of Arts and Culture through the Mzansi Golden Economy, for sponsoring this festival,” said Bila.
The main discussion of the first day was the preserving of vernacular languages and encouraging poets to not only write in English.
“We need to understand the role of poetry in society and also celebrate our own poetry, our languages and the rich things that we regard as our own world,” added Bila.
