The house song ‘Count your blessings’ has been very popular in the Vhembe region over the past few months.

From the airwaves to night clubs and social events, the song is regarded as a most entertaining hit by many.

This is just one of the 14 tracks on the album that was released late last November by DJ Rabs-Vhafuwi as he is popularly known. His music is not only popular in the region, but throughout the whole country. He has played various gigs, even as far as Cape Town, and recently in Botswana.

The song Count your blessings, which was initially released as a single track last year, has already scooped various accolades, including song winner on Metro FM Oskido’s show. It has featured on the soundtracks of nationally recognised deejays, including DJ Terence and DJ Euphonik.

The success of his single track prompted DJ Rabs-Vhafuwi to call his debut album Count your blessings. “As a DJ, I just composed the music that defines me, and eventually people liked it,” he said.

Rabs-Vhafuwi is Rabelani Mudau, a local entrepreneur, deejay, producer and record label owner. He hails from the Dzimauli area outside Thohoyandou.

The 30-year-old DJ has been in the music and entertainment industry since he was a student at the Vaal University of Technology. The quality of his music earned him a name even among national recording labels. So far, he has already been signed by Sheer House music for publishing.

Rabs-Vhafuwi tried a number of times to enter into the South African house music industry before but couldn’t make it. It started in 2004 when he bought a sound system to rent out during social events.

In 2012, he composed a house track titled Funduzi ,featuring his poet mother, Mrs Sarah Mudau. He said that his family had always been inspirational. “When I grew up, my father had a huge sound system, and he would always play it. Even his car was fitted with huge loudspeakers,” he said.

Ever since making the track on which he featured his mother, he has intensified the time he spends composing music. He refined his House mixing skills until he produced music that defines his identity whilst simultaneously entertaining his followers.  “I tried several times to enter the industry and it was initially not working, but I never stopped,” he said.

He then decided that the quality of his music would speak for him. He started sending his music to national DJs and record labels that later recognised his talent and approached him. “I received a overwhelmingly positive response from various people. When they heard my song, they approached me and that paved the way for me,” he said.

Rabs-Vhafuwi studied production management, foundation management and programmed operational finance. As a humble, goal-orientated, classy and professional DJ, he initiated his own recording label and titled it FreezeTheMoment productions. He is active onFacebook, with his page (Rabs Vhafuwi), having already attracted nearly 16 000 likes.
