African rhumba king Kanda Bongo Man has not only confirmed his appearance to perform at the Phalaphala FM Royal Heritage Festival 2014 at the Royal Gardens-Nandoni tomorrow, but he also promised fireworks.

In what is certainly a coup for the organisers, the DRC-born music great, who spent a lot of his time in France, said he would bring a strong team of dancers. He will also sing songs from his forthcoming album.

He was already seen rehearsing in Thohoyandou and those able to sneak in liked what they saw.

The Phalaphala FM Royal Heritage Festival is preceded by King Toni Mphephu’s Fun Walk today, with a choice of a 5, 10 or 15 kilometre walk as well as the royal traditional bare-knuckle fistfighting (Musangwe). “The bare-knuckle fights showcase the fearlessness of Vhavenda warriors,” goes a statement attributed to King Mphephu.

According him, the celebration is not just to acknowledge Heritage Day, but also the unity in celebrating it together as Vhavenda people, bringing the clans together and commemorating the legacy that “our forefathers have given to us.”

The invitation has been extended to all Vhavenda Chiefs, other kingdoms in Limpopo and different stakeholders in local and national government.

“It is not only an occasion for the Vhavenda people but for others as well to learn and experience what the culture is all about," said the project manager, Mr TW Mukwevho.

The celebrated Kanda Bongoman, who will be one of the drawcards at the festival, said his band was rehearsing in Johannesburg. He said he was happy to perform in Thohoyandou before embarking on an international tour that will take him to England, Ethiopia and Belgium. “My song In the Morning is very popular in South Africa and obviously one of the hits I will play,” said Bongoman, who boasts 14 successful albums.

Other artists billed to perform are : Oliver Mtukudzi, Mafikizolo, Ringo Madlingozi, Khuli Chana, DJ Fresh & Euphonik, MiCasa, Big Nuz, iFani, Naked DJ, DJ Sphe & Naves, Colbert Mukwevho, DJ Nipro, Mizo Phyll, DJ Soul scenic, Kanakana “Cook”, Benny Mayengani, DJ Jonez, Taki & Rofhiwa, l Majo, Adziambei Band and Khakhati & Friends.
